Food is one of the essential vital resources that we survive on and I have always believed a balanced diet is one of best medicine we could have to keep us happy and health. Below are some useful tips for some natural remedies whenever you encounter some of the health problems~ Though in saying that, I’d still advise you to see a doctor if you have any doubts with your issues before it gets serios.

在我們的生活當中食物是不可或缺的生存資糧;我從以前到現在一直深信著均衡的飲食是維持健康與快樂的最佳良藥。以下有一則實用的小資訊(雖然全都是英文,歹勢喔!)可以告訴我們針對特別情況的天然療法。但我還是奉勸大家:如果持有任何保留或懷疑的話還是去看一生比較好,以免讓原本的問題更嚴重!

7 kinds of food to help reduce fat build-up / 七種專「吃」脂肪的食物

Losing weight is a constant battle for people nowadays not only to stay healthy but also to look fit and beautiful. And the key thing to lose weight is to get rid of that extra bit of fat! And I guess it is sometimes called “war” when we have to sacrifice things we love to eat or go on a special diet (plus exercises too!). However if you eat the right food, you don’t have to be mean to your empty and can still lose weight! I have recently been forwarded an email (in Mandarin) talking about 7 kinds of food that help to reduce fat build-up:

減肥不僅是為了自身的健康,更是要讓身材苗條有型的一種挑戰,對現在的人來說可真是一大戰爭。而減肥最主要的是要減去多餘的脂肪!除了要做適當的運動,均衡的飲食,還得犧牲一堆可口美味的東西,對很多人來說還真是一種掙扎啊...但基本上只要你挑對東西,你在減肥的過程中就可以不用愧對自己的肚皮了。最近我收到了一封郵件,內容則是告訴美女們 7 樣有助於減少脂肪堆積的食物(原文是中文信件):

1. Bananas – even though it is rather high in calories, it has rather low in fat and full of potassium. It not only is very filling but also helps reducing the building up of fat, especially the lower parts of your body!

香蕉 – 雖然卡路裏很高,但脂肪卻很低,而且含有豐富鉀,又飽肚又低脂,可減少脂肪在下身積聚,是減肥時候的理想食品。

2. Apples – apples contain malic acid which increases the process of metabolism.

蘋果 – 內含蘋果酸可以加速代謝,減少下身的脂肪! ! !

3. Eggs – The contained riboflavin (Vit. B2) is helpful in reducing bodily fat. Plus, thiamine (Vit. B1) as well as niacin (Vit. B3) found in eggs are able to trim slim our hips and legs.

5. Pumpkins – According to TCM, it is a wonder vegetable that benefits our internal organs such as stomach and spleen. Its high fibre content is surely needed to lose weight!

南瓜 – 味甘性溫,補養脾臟及胃之元氣,且潤肺及利尿,食用既養身又減肥。

6. Papayas – they are known for a special enzyme to prevent your body storing extra fat. Papaya pectin also helps to cleanse colon naturally to avoid building up of unwanted wastes in your body.

木瓜 – 含有獨特的蛋白分解酵素,可以清除因吃肉類而積聚在下身的脂肪;木瓜肉所含的果膠更是優良的洗腸劑,可減少廢物在下身積聚。

7. Tea – there are many compounds that tea contains that helps to fight the physical absorption of fat, such as theaflavins and thearubigins. Though it only works when you have tea without milk~

– 茶類裡的茶黃素以及茶黃素有去除體內脂肪的作用,不過前提是要單獨喝不能配牛奶唷!

Warm honey and cinnamon drink to relief cold symptoms / 蜂蜜肉桂來減緩感冒的症狀

If you do a quick search on Google by typing “honey + cinnamon”, you’d get a whole list of results telling you how incredible this simple home remedy is!! Well, personally I cannot validate its effectiveness on heart disease, toothache or pimples etc; but I can say that it does help with alleviating cold symptoms!!

Honey has been extremely valued because of its nutritional and healing properties. It is a natural product with beneficial effects, where the application dates back for many centuries. According to TCM, honey is able to release excess internal heat and dryness in our body, as well as the function to relieve pain and soothe our respiratory system. A lot of TCM prescriptions and pills require the addition of honey to strengthen its effectiveness. Just to note that honey isn’t suitable for infants less than 12 months old because their immune systems are still weak!!Honey

Cinnamon is also a common ingredient in TCM prescriptions. It is said to help restore internal heat and Yang energy in the human body, as well as the ability to reduce coldness and pain. This is best for people who often ‘feel cold’ especially when the climate is warm.

I use this type of drink as a nourishing method rather than seeing it as a type of medication. As mentioned in the topic, it is to relief cold symptoms as both ingredients have the ability to ease pain. On top of that, it helps calming on the throat if I cough too much and to maintain my body temperature to keep me warm. This is not a magical elixir that cures colds faster, in saying that, I’d suggest you also drink lots of warm lemon water to boost your Vitamin C while are you sick.

How to make the drink

  • There’s no definite measurement for me, but I normally use 1/3 teaspoon of cinnamon powder with a tablespoon of honey.
  • The key thing is to mix the cinnamon powder first with a bit of water to make a paste in the cup. It is because the granule of cinnamon powder is too fine, so it will only float on the surface of water and won’t mix well if you add in honey later.
  • Fill 8/10 of the cup with warm to hot water (not exceeding the temperature of 40°C so you do not destroy to valuable nutrients from the honey) and honey to mix well with the cinnamon paste.
  • Enjoy~~~

Caution: This drink would not suit those who constantly gets diarrhoea, because of honey. Pregnant women should also avoid cinnamon as it is a blood-circulating stimulant.

在網路上常常流通著蜂蜜肉桂神奇療效的文章,但說實在的,我個人覺得有很多的主張還有待證實;好比說在心血管疾病的預防、牙痛以及消除痘痘等。但是感冒如果喝蜂蜜肉桂茶真的有助於減緩感冒的症狀喔!!

蜂蜜含有豐富的營養以及療效的性質,自從古代就應用於醫療藥物的領域。中醫認為蜂蜜潤肺止咳、潤燥、止痛、解讀、矯味、具有補中緩痛、解毒潤燥的雙向性功能,許多中藥物的炮製及丸類藥物的製作,都需蜂蜜的加入達到功效。不過要注意的是12個月以內的幼童因為免疫系統尚未發育完全不能服用蜂蜜。

另外中醫也常以肉桂入藥,它味辛、甘,性大熱,具溫中補陽、散寒止痛的功能。適合脾胃體質虛寒者用,有發汗、溫經的功效。Cinnamon

與其把這飲品當作藥物,到不如說這是感冒專用的養生茶。我的標題也指出這有助於減緩感冒的症狀,因為蜂蜜和肉桂都同時具有止痛的效果。另外,當我咳嗽咳得很嚴重時它可以舒緩我的喉嚨;而肉桂散寒的功用在我感冒時也扮演重要的角色。這不是甚麼可以讓感冒趕快好的神奇仙丹,說到這,我還是會建議你在感冒時也多喝溫溫的檸檬水來補充身體所需的維他命C。

飲品的調配

  • 我其實沒有絕對的配量,不過一般說來我都是用 1/3 茶匙的肉桂粉加上一大匙的蜂蜜。
  • 在調配的重點是要先用少量的水在杯子裡把肉桂粉拌成肉桂泥!因為肉桂粉太細太輕了,如果直接用一杯水去攪肉桂粉很難攪散,你會發現肉桂粉都浮在水面上。先做成泥狀的話可以避免這個問題!
  • 杯子之後再加入熱水至八分滿(水溫不要超過 40°C 以免太熱就會破壞蜂蜜的營養素),之後再放入蜂蜜好好攪拌就成啦!
  • 很好喝喔~~~

注意事項:這飲品可能不適合容易腹瀉的人,因為蜂蜜有通便的作用。孕婦準媽媽們也最好避免,因為肉桂有活血的功能。

The acupuncture point for autumn: Taichong / 秋天的專用穴位:太沖

March marks the begging of autumn in New Zealand. It is a cooler climate where the sky is extremely blue and the warm sun shining above that no longer scorching the world. This is certainly my favourite season of the year. Though according to Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM), autumn is drying season and such climate can cause excess internal heat in our body. This would impact specific organs such as lung and stomach, which also further affects our skin, nose, throat, respiratory system, metabolism and the immune system. There is a specific term in TCM called “lung heat”, which doesn’t just imply the organ, lung, itself, but also the other organs and body parts I mentioned earlier. In other words, it is everything associated to the activity and functioning of the lung.

General symptoms of “lung heat” are characterised by drying nose, mouth, tongue, throat and skin, as well as difficulty to breathe easily and dry chest coughs. If you find you are likely to suffer these symptoms, especially in autumn, then it is possible you have excessive internal heat in your body. In order to reduce the heat in your body, try a self-acupuncture massage with just one acupuncture point: Taichong! It is located about 1.5 cm above the gash between the big toe and the second toe, on both feet. When you place your finger on this point you will feel a slight cavity under the skin, and if you feel soreness and pain when pressing it with a bit of pressure, that means you have a lot of heat more than you need and you are required to massage this point more.

For optimal result, it is suggested you soak your feet in warm to hot water for about 10 minutes before massaging this point. When you massage, press upward with your thumb from the direction of your toe to your ankle for about 3 minutes. Stay healthy!!!

三月正好是紐西蘭秋天的開始。此時的天空特別的藍而且陽光又非常的柔和溫暖,是我最喜歡的季節。但是中醫說入秋後,天氣乾燥,人們易上火,易引起肺熱、胃熱等症狀。同時也易影響我們的皮膚、鼻腔、喉嚨、呼吸道系統、體內代謝以及免疫系統。“肺熱”這名詞在中醫不是單單指人體肺的器官,而是我先前提到的其他器官及人體部位;也就是說與肺部活動與機能相關的部位在中醫做一個統稱。

常見的肺熱症狀包含口乾舌燥、鼻腔及皮膚乾燥、呼吸不順暢以及乾咳。如果你發現你在秋天容易有這些症狀的話那麼你可能是易上火的體質喔!不過這些症狀可以透過按摩太沖穴改善。

太沖穴位於大足趾和第二個足趾之間的縫隙向上1.5公分凹陷處,左右各一。屬於足厥陰肝經,按摩此穴對肝火旺盛帶來的上火症狀效果非常好。如果把手放在太沖穴上,稍用力就會感覺非常痛,說明肝火比較旺盛,那更要多按摩這個穴位。

最佳按摩手法:在按摩太沖穴前,先用熱水泡腳約10分鐘,然後用大拇指從下向上推揉3分鐘即可。健康在你自己手中,好好把握 🙂

The unknown damages of crossing legs / 翹腳不為人知的害處

Everywhere I go I see a lot of ladies sitting with their legs crossed around the knee thinking to themselves that this is the way to be elegant; and I have been accustomed to this manner even since I was a child without realizing the damage it could do. My mom, a Hatha yoga instructor,  has been nagging that sitting like this long term will cause a tilted pelvis, which will cause more pain and suffering if I am giving birth to a child (OK, she is putting her concerns way ahead of the game, but she does have a point!). Though a bad habit is such a difficult thing to drop!!! It just happens unconsciously and yes you may have guessed it, I do have a slightly tilted pelvis at my right hip, which is obvious when I am wearing tighter skirts or pants!! >”<

Though it wasn’t until recently when I come across an image shared on Facebook from the Apple Daily (a Taiwanese press) published in 2004 which fully outlined the drawbacks in detail (please refer to the picture below). Such position not only tilts your pelvis, but it also curves your spines. So if you have frequent back pain and sore waist/lower back yet not sure why, this may be the answer. According to the image, crossinImageg legs also tilts your shoulder and create tension around one side of your shoulder and neck, which makes that area sore. Moreover, it makes your legs go numb due to blood does not circulate properly when the capillaries and nerves are pressed together.

Some sources indicate prolonged sitting with legs crossed contribute to varicose and spider veins, while one even suggests increased cardiovascular risk . Yet there are also articles disputing such theory (and here). Nevertheless, I will still try to remember not to cross my legs in the future, given the previous harmful consequences I talked about above. What about you?

不管去到哪我常常看到許多女士坐著都會翹腳,認為這是很優雅的坐姿;而其實我從小也習慣這樣做,卻根本不知道這樣對健康有什麼危害。我的媽媽是一位哈達瑜珈老師,所以也一天到晚對我的姿勢碎碎念,甚至還說我這樣導致骨盆不正以後生小孩會很困難(好啦!她這樣有點扯太遠了,不過她說的基本上都是實話...不得不承認啊!)但這養成已久的壞習慣還真是很難馬上改掉。常常無意識地就會把腳翹起來,不過我想你也猜到了,我的骨盆確實有往右上偏一點,而且不管我穿裙子或是褲子都還蠻明顯的...囧”

直到最近我在 Facebook 看Image到網友轉發蘋果日報於2004年的報導圖片而有所警悟,因為裡面很清楚地標示翹腿種種的不好(請看上圖或是此連結)。翹腿這姿勢不僅讓你的骨盆歪斜,也會導致脊椎測彎,也就是裡面所謂的C 型脊椎。因此如果你時常會腰酸背痛也許就是翹腳造成的。根據報導,翹腳也會讓肩膀斜傾,導致一邊的肩膀及脖子肌肉緊繃造成酸痛。此外,也因為翹腳會壓迫微血管以及神經,導致血液流通不順,時常會引發腳麻。

有些消息指出長期翹腿會導致靜脈曲張以及微血管擴張*,甚至有增加心血管疾病機率*的可能。

然而也有消息反對這項論點*(及這裡*)。不過基於先前討論過的種種壞處,我想我還是會試著記得坐著的時候不要翹腳。那麼你呢?
